In December 2020, “Left Out: Children and youth with special needs in the pandemic” was published by the B.C. Representative for Children and Youth. The report—created in collaboration with several organizations that work with families of children and youth with special needs and featuring the voices of families themselves—notes that during the pandemic, families felt abandoned and left to figure out their own solutions. It provides recommendations for the provincial government to immediately address systemic barriers and inequities in B.C.’s supports for children and youth with special needs.

Collaborate with community public health officials and health authorities to explore whether “bubbles” can be created for in-home services such as Nursing Support Services and respite to enable families as well as service providers to limit their exposure to others during a pandemic.
