On February 6, 2019, B.C.’s Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner published Investigation Report P19-01, “Full Disclosure: Political parties, campaign data, and voter consent.” The report investigated how political parties manage the personal information of British Columbians, and found parties are generally collecting too much information from potential voters without getting proper consent. In examining how political parties retain and protect the personal information they collect, investigators found a number of deficiencies with retention and audit practices. The report concludes with 17 recommendations for all B.C. political parties.
