To be successful, a National Action Plan must be accompanied by adequate sustained funding to meet its goals as well as means to ensure accountability to Parliament and to the Indigenous women and their families who the plan would serve. It is essential to the success of the commission, and the province’s relations with Indigenous people, that UNDRIP lens be brought into the creation of the new commission, and the work it will do. All of government has the responsibility to review policies, programs and legislation to determine how to bring the UNDRIP’s principles into action. The commission will have a role, from a human rights perspective, in ensuring that government fulfills this responsibility.
